Pondering life

I believe one should be in control of ones life and destiny the parts that we don’t have control over should not be condemned as they are an indirect byproduct of ourselves.
I find myself pondering life again. Why the mindless struggle to one up each-other to prove to others what we are capable of, have we really not evolved that much from the days we ran in hoards and rule was governed by the one who struck 1st.
I see every day evidence that in spite of technological advances, ethical and moral codes created with the best of intentions. Our main drive in life is still a selfish need to satisfy our basic and instinctual selfishness. What happened to the real selfless acts of kindness and love for the fellow man? And did it ever truly exist or is that just a fairytale covering our inability to be kind to each other just to hide the shame of our selfishness?
